Every legitimate religious belief system has some sort of book or collection or writings that define the basis of it's existence to: maintain some sort of consistency between followers, guarantee procured longevity through generations, identify collective goals, and give points of reference as teaching tools. Some have survived excessive debate, viscous attack, brutal abuse, and multi-cultural multi-language interpretation.
