Bible: No Rejection

My August 2006 Letter to the Editor was the product of a heart on fire to see the love of God used for, instead of against, people.  There's no two ways about it, God chooses the way of love first and gave Himself for it.  This letter is a response to a multitude of constant letters against people for all kinds of reasons.  I reduced the original version of the article to accommodate an editorial format, but the original is included below with many complete scripture and commandments quoted.  I can only hope and pray that this article makes a difference in at least one person's life.  Jesus draws "all people" to himself while those who are not of faith drive people away.

I hesitated to write such an article but seeing so much controversy and discrediting of the Word of God brought me to the prayerful conclusion that I could not watch this go farther without inserting my two cents.  It's been happening all over the country for years and is the most divisive use of scripture in contemporary times.  My material and letters have been in metropolitan and local and group publications around the globe and it is a priviledge to submit this to a local publication here.  I know way too many people who are hurting and who don't believe God paid for their salvation because so many critical people are self-righteous enough to believe they are comfortably in God's will without error.  It is just like satan to deceive with such divisiveness; we have to realize that if we are going to claim to be Christian then we are who the devil tries to attack with deception first.  We can know when we are deceived if we become critical and lack the fruit of the Spirit (see below).

1 Corinthians 14:33  For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as (it should be) in all churches of the saints.

2 Timothy 1:7  For God has not given us (or anyone) the spirit of fear (lack of peace); but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Any interpretation of scripture that sets God at odds with anyone more than any other person, believer or not, is divisive and emanates confusion.

JUDGMENT - TOLERANCE - ACCEPTANCE - WITNESS

I am a evangelical fundamental believer in the faith and power of Jesus Christ.  I was raised in knowing the Christian Bible very well and have been in ministries most of my life.  I dislike it very much when anyone talks as if they are speaking for all or most Christians because they usually aren’t speaking for me.  Critical Fundamentalists: If you believe God is using you as a witness of His love and faith then why do so many people know you for your demeaning, judging, criticism, and condemnation?  Stop and think before telling people how to go to hell more than how to know God more as the Word of God requires you to do?  Faith in God leaves it up to God to work with people as He sees fit.  Jesus ministered in hope, not in condemnation.  Philippians 4:5 Let your gentleness be evident to all that the Lord is near and Romans 10:15 . . . How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

According to Galatians no law can be written that the fruit of the Spirit violates; and laws can and should be written against discrimination, especially concerning those things affecting people’s abilities to take care of themselves.  Galatians 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit . . . against such there is no law.  If the fruit of the Spirit is evidence of our faith then it should not try to appear powerful to provoke people  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another (Galatians 5:26). (Luke 6:41-45)

Non-fundamental liberal believers:  Solid faith in God doesn't’t need to use doubt and discredit of scriptures to prove how much God really loves diversities of people?  Even in natural actions Jesus didn’t have to change clear Bible statements of law or grace to welcome anyone and everyone who expressed faith to simply believe.

If somebody wants to use the 613 commandments/laws of the Old Testament to give “anyone” the idea that they are not acceptable to God then they are to follow the whole law themselves:  James 2:10  For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (Romans 2:12).  Thank God that Jesus Christ fulfilled the OT law in our place because here are a few examples of OT laws most often broken today that He covered for us:

DEBT We are not to charge or pay interest (lev 25:37, Deut 23:20), participate in unrestrained spending transactions with collateral, as cosigner, or bond (Ex 22:24): There goes mortgages and charge cards.  We are to lend to poor people and not expect repayment (Ex 22:24).  No one is to be forced to pay a dept to us (Deut 24:10) and all debts are to be wiped free and clear every seven years (Deut 15:2).
LAW A rich person is not to be favored in courts (Lev 19:15), and no one is to take revenge on anyone (Lev 19:18).  Rulers are not to have excessive riches (Deut 17:17) OOPS!  Courts are to admit and pay for errors in judgment (Lev 4:13).  Rulers and college authorities are not to be spoken negatively of (Ex 22:27).
MINISTRY Relatives of ministers are not to own any land (Deut 18:1) How many churches would that close?  No ministers are to be defiled by being in the presence of or under the same roof as deceased body, including relatives, attending their burial, or mourn them (Lev 21:3, 21:11). And we thought it was the minister’s job to perform funerals?  People are not to serve in a sanctuary if they have a blemish (Lev 21:17), a temporary blemish (Lev 21:21) or messy hair (Lev 10:6) Zits are not allowed in church.
INDIVIDUAL We are not to wear clothes made of wool and linen together (Deut 22:11) Maybe naked would do?  But, we are to wear a small leather case containing Bible texts on our head and arm (Deut 6:8).  Every believer is to handwrite our own copy of the Bible (Deut 31:19), recite grace “after” meals (Deut 8:10) OOPS AGAIN.
FOOD We are not to keep leftovers or carry out from an Easter meal (Ex 12:10 & 46).  Fields are not to be entirely harvested to leave some for poor people to have (Lev 19:9, 23:22) All poor people are to be maintained by giving them what they need, no exceptions (Deut 15:7).
SPEECH Not to wrong the stranger in speech (Ex. 22:20) Oops, there goes the judging and condemning.

The commandments are for exposing the sin problem, not for condemning each other and the light of salvation is not for illuminating others sin, problems, or differences.  God has repeatedly blessed His people to bless others and we have failed to do so time and time again.  Do you suppose that believing Jesus also means that we have to believe and live by His Word when He said “. . . Go and preach the “good news to everyone”. (Mar 16:15) or when the loving and popular scripture of John 3:16 is followed immediately by John 3:17-18 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  He that believeth on him is not condemned: . . .  There is no discrimination in the Bible to keep any diversity of people from believing in faith, worshiping together in church, or from “participating” in ministry.  How else could millions of all sorts of diversities of believers around the country and throughout the world, worship in faith claiming salvation through Jesus Christ without hesitation or question that the love and power of Christ is in them?  Apparently those who are critical and condemning have simply taken the place of those who preached the gospel of pro-slavery based on Bible interpretation in our country’s Civil War times.  Do judgmental believers really express faith when contradicting the Bible’s clear statements against people judging each other’s salvation and defining God as the only righteous judge?

I like all kinds of Bible versions but don’t think that any of them are perfect (albeit the sometimes vague KJV seems to be more accurate overall).  There was no such word as heterosexual or homosexual to be interpreted from and it seems hypocritical that even avid KJV believers jump on the judgmental bandwagon when they see such words used in other versions even though the KJV does not have them.  This is very similar to the way Germans used Gideon Hotel Bibles to encrypt communications to kill Jews.  Anyone whose goal is to use the Word of God against people in any way instead of for them, and to encourage their anger instead of faith, is counter productive in the cause of Christ.  I’m going to hate seeing people get to heaven then be removed for having shorted God’s power of grace from the gospel message (Rev 22:18-19).  God forbid if it is found that something I said made anyone feel hopeless and lose their eternal life.

My old fashioned believing dad taught me that no one is unacceptable to God and there are plenty of people throughout this area who can attest to his love, gentleness, care, and concern for everyone.  He didn’t care how down-and-out anyone was or whether they seemed to ever have had a bath; he would do what he could, encourage them and give them a caring smile.  My dad rounded up a group and took us all roller skating, to the movies, to the fair and theme parks, purchased televisions and electronic equipment, and all kinds of other things when the churches we attended and love didn’t believe in any of those things.  And when he walked up to people who: wore leather from head to toe, were covered with tattoos, or whatever; it would have repelled or even scared most traditional churchgoers; I was surprised to find that they knew my dad, loved him, and found him to be the most caring Christian man they had ever known.  Dad wanted to know if I believe in Christ’s salvation for myself, and he had faith to believe God provided that salvation for himself and “anyone” who believes for themselves.  Anything less is evidence that a person’s faith in God’s ability and worthiness to be the only true judge, is greatly lacking.

How do Christians grow: by “participating” in the great commission.  How will young, weak, and new believers grow who are diversified and unlike traditional believers?  Certainly not by becoming clones of circumcision or non-ham eaters as early New Testament times wanted gentiles to be.  If I could find the support to build our local, and globally successful, www.unidiversal.com ministry into a local ministry inclusive of all diversities, I would.  And I know through great faith in the all inclusive Jesus Christ that it would be blessed as much as the global outreach has been; and my dad would love it too.  Just like evil works by deception "in spite of” God, Jesus works by grace "in spite of" everyone’s inability to be righteous.

To quote a bumper sticker: “I'm pretty sure God prefers spiritual fruits to religious nuts.”

Additional Notes:

RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT
If someone is going around discerning others righteously then his actions do not invite others judgment on himself or put the spotlight on himself instead of on glorifying God.  A truly spiritual man judges (discerns) "all things", i.e., "But he that is Spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man" (1Corinthians 2:15). Consequently, the Spiritual man will find the most appropriate means-- if possible-- to win those who can be reached for Jesus Christ. "To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some" (1Corinthians 9:22).  One person condemning another has nothing to do with witnessing.

RESISTANCE TO JUDGEMENT
If your judgment is being resisted then either it is not magnifying God or you are casting it before those who do not wish to accept it.  Either way, the Bible has instructed you to not give judgment in these circumstances.  "Judge not, that ye be not judged... Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you" (Matthew 7:1, 6).  Jesus does not mean for us to make victims or martyrs out of ourselves, to be a true martyr is to be humble enough to encourage with gentle love not pounce as imitation roaring lions as the devil does.

SPIRITUAL FRUIT

Be a gentle, loving witness, have enough faith to leave convictions up to God; the only righteous judge.  Being fishers of people leaves it up to the Spirit of God to clean them when, if, and however He sees fit.

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit IS

love
joy
peace
longsuffering
gentleness
goodness
faith
meekness
temperance

Which category do those you are trying to witness to see you in?

But the fruit of the Spirit is NOT

hatefulness
anger
uproar
impatience
forcefulness
harshness

James 2 Paraphrase (see KJV below)

1 Fellow believers, don’t claim to have faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Lord, if you differentiate between people.
2 If anyone comes to your assembly wearing nice clothes with gold jewelry, and a poor person enters wearing unattractive clothes;
3 and if you show more respect for the person with nice clothes by inviting them to sit in a good place; and tell the poor person to stand or sit out of the way,
4 you, yourself, are partial and make yourselves judges of un-Godly thinking.
5 Listen, I love you all; has God not chosen the poor throughout this world to be rich in faith and the beneficiaries of the kingdom who who God has promised to them that love Him?
6 But you have humiliated the poor.  Isn’t it rich people who oppress you and humiliate you before judgment seats?
7 Don’t they try to discredit your respectable name?
8 If you accomplish the supreme law as stated in scripture; You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well:
9 But if you show more respect for one person than another, you are breaking the law of God and are convicted of violating the law.
10 Anyone who tries to keep the whole law, but has an offense in any point, they are guilty of violating all of the law.
11 Because God, who said not to commit adultery; also said not to kill.  If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have violated all of the law.
12 So you are to speak and do likewise as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.
13 For God will judge those, who do not show mercy, without mercy; and the merciful will rejoice without merciless judgement.
14 What help is it if fellow believers say they have faith and do not act mercifully?  Can faith save them?
15 If your fellow human beings are naked or don’t have enough food for the day,
16 and you tell them to go in peace and be warm and filled but you do not give them the things they need for their body, what good is it?
17 Likewise faith, if it is not followed by the works of mercy, is invalidated without them.
18 Yes, anyone can say others have faith and they do works: just try show your faith without works and I’ll show you the evidence of my faith by my works.
19 You believe that there is one God; you do well but devils also believe, and they tremble in fear of God too.
20 How could you understand, as a worthless person, that faith without the actions of mercy is useless?
21 Wasn’t Abraham, the founder of our faith, vindicated by his actions when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
22 Don’t you see how faith substantiated by works, and by his works faith was perfected?
23 The scripture was fulfilled that said Abraham believed God, and it characterized him as righteous and he was called the Friend of God.
24 You can see then how that by the works of God’s mercy a person can be justified, not by faith alone.
25 Wasn’t Rahab the harlot justified by works likewise; when she greeted the messengers and sent them a different way?
26 Just like the body without the spirit is useless, faith without the works of God’s mercy is useless as well.

James 2 (KJV)

1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons.
2  For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3  And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4  Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5  Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6  But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
7  Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
8  If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9  But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10  For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all.
11  For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12  So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13  For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
14  What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15  If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what [doth it] profit?
17  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20  But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24  Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25  Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent [them] out another way?
26  For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Romans 8

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
